Installing PaperCut on Mac devices

Summary

Guide on how to install Papercut client on Mac devices

Body

Gather PaperCut client installation files

  1. On a windows computer, admin share into the print server (go to \\printsrv as if you were adding a printer to your computer)

  2. In the list of printers, search for the folder PCClient. Open the folder and copy and paste the mac folder to an external drive that you can use on the Mac.

    • Alternatively, you can connect to the server on the Mac by going to Go > Connect to server > smb://printsrv/pcclient. If it asks for credentials, you need to use any CCC AD account (E.I: clackamas\musiclab AD account). You can then copy the mac folder to the desktop.

NOTE: If you are planning on adding a Xerox printer to the Mac, it is recommended to install the Xerox global print driver for Macs before installing the printer.

Install PaperCut

  1.  Open the mac folder on the Mac and run the client-local-install package.

  2. The Papercut client will potentially ask for what credentials to use. These credentials are NOT the account that will actually be billed through Papercut. This is just to tie the client to a Papercut account, mainly just to view available credits. This also cannot be skipped.
    • If you click cancel then it will try to find a Papercut account that matches the username of the account you are logged into the MAC.
    • If this is a single-person staff MAC device, it is recommended to have them sign in using their credentials.
    • If this is a shared MAC, it is recommended to use a shared AD account (that has Papercut) that matches the department using it. (I.E the musiclab AD account).

  3. Make the PaperCut application run on startup:
    1. On MacOS 12 and older: Click > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Click the lock in the bottom left to allow changes to be saved > select the user the Mac uses > Login Items tab > click the in the lower left and add PaperCut from the list.
    2. On MacOS 13 and newer: Click > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > click the and add PaperCut from the list.

Install the printer

  1. Go to the printer section:
    1. On MacOS 12 and older: Click > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
    2. On MacOS 13 and newer: Click > System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  2. Click on the
  3. In the new window that comes up, right click next to the tabs at the top and select Customize toolbar > Drag and drop the Advanced icon and select done.

  4. Open the advanced tab and fill out the information as follows:
    • Type: Windows printer via spoolss
    • Device: Another Device
    • URL: smb://<print server>/<printer hostname> (example:smb://printsrvstu/bh104-x6655)
    • Name: Change this to be the printer's hostname
    • Location: you can leave blank
    • Use: Use either the Generic PCL Driver or the Xerox driver that matches the model (if you installed it).

Post config

  1. Test printing to the printer (you can open the print queue, select Printer in the app menu bar, then select Print Test Page)
  2. The Mac will likely ask for credentials:
NOTE: These are the credentials that Papercut will attempt to be billed by default, unless the print queue is registered as an unauthenticated printer in Papercut.
    1. If this is a staff Mac for one person, have them use their own college credentials (in the format of clackamas\<username>. Have it save the credentials in the keychain!).
    2. If this is a shared or student-use Mac, use the shared AD account mentioned early when installing Papercut. (Use the format of clackamas\printstaff. Have it save the credentials in the keychain!)
  3. If the printer queue is on the student side (\\printsrvstu) then PaperCut should ask for credentials as well. This mimics what our Windows computers do. You can use your credentials to test with. If the print goes through then you are done!
  4. Be sure to disconnect from the servers you connect to and delete the mac folder from the desktop.
